About the Database

The Research Council of the Northwestern University Medical School is considering deploying and maintaining a Researcher Interest Database that would be accessible to all faculty in the Medical School. Depending on feedback from you, submissions to this database could replace the existing annual review process.

About the Survey

The purpose of this survey is to find out how much interest there is in having a NUMS researcher interest database available and determine what information should be available in the database. To give you a better idea what this database could look like and how a web-based search engine would operate, a functional mockup can be found at: This is only a mockup and does not have the information or the search features that are likely to be found in the final database. If you could please fill out this form on-line, the results will be tabulated and made available at:

The survey starts here. This survey is insecure.

Please keep in mind several things while you are taking this survey:

  1. How useful each option is for you personally.
  2. How useful the option will be for the NU community.
  3. The amount of time it will take to update the information in the database.
The updating process will be made as easy as possible, but it will require some effort. Your NUnet ID will be used to control access to your entry in the database.

How often should the data be updated?

How would you like to submit new information

(See http://www.basic.nwu.edu/research/db_entry_form.html for a possible web format)

Confidentiality/Accessibility

How accessible should the data be:

Searching

The search engine at http://www.basic.nwu.edu/research/interest.html currently is simply indexing and returning faculty web pages found on the IGP, MSTP, NUIN, IBiS, Cell and Molecular Biology, Molecular Pharmacology and Biological Chemistry, and Physiology web sites. Although the data available is not as complete as the envisioned database, does the kind of access and searching options available at http://www.basic.nwu.edu/research/interest.html seem to be a good way for you to access this database?

Is there some other way of accessing the web data that you would prefer?
In general, would you prefer a researcher database that is accessible to you:

How useful do you think a research database will be?

For you personally
For the community

Making this database part of the annual review process

Should submissions to this database be merged with the annual review, departmental review, and program review processes?

What do you think the most common uses of the database would be?

For instance, do you think you would use it to identify other faculty using a particular protocol or technique, a particular piece of equipment, or model system?
