For E20 Session on February 24th, 1998
3-5:30 pm Class will be in Tech A110, Evanston Campus of Northwestern University
The homework will be submitted electronically and will be keyed to your NUNet alias. You will need to have Netscape Navigator 2.02 or Internet Explorer 3.0 or later installed on your computer. You will need to have an active NUNet connection while doing each section of the homework.
Those of you using a modem for your NUNet connection may find that the 90 minute modem timeout is too short to complete this homework. Don't worry, you can log back in and pick up where you left off at a later time. In addition, the MacOS and Windows versions of Netscape and Internet Explorer do not let you submit more than about 64K at a time. Any submissions longer than this are automatically and without warning truncated
In any case, when you login and create a session with your NetID, you will be automatically logged out if you do not submit or load another page from this server within 20 minutes. If this happens, log back in on the page you are presented with, and after you are back in the server, use your back button twice to go back to the page you were working on and resubmit.
This assignment was designed to help you become acquainted with bioinformatics and bioinformatic capabilities on the Internet, and familiarize yourself with some of the methods for locating specific genomic information. If you are already familiar with part of the assignment (such as BLAST searching) feel free to skip it. The only exception to this is the Genotyping section. This section will be available after the 20th of February and the data entered in this section will be used in the design of some genotyping experiments. Each member of the class will be given independent alleles to examine.
The homework is broken into the following four sections
