Welcome to the Basic Sciences
at the Northwestern University Medical School
At this web site
At this point, this site is primarily a collection of references to useful
research and research funding information. The Medical School has just purchased
a site license for the Prophet 5 statistical and DNA analysis
software package, and you can find download instructions and more information
here.
In particular, you may find
the list of links,
the funding page,
the Primer Design page,
the Oligonucleotide Properties Calculator,
the Protein Properties Calculator,
the Windows ABI sequencer ,
and the research
resources page of immediate use. I would like to include more
internet-related information, for instance comments on useful and not so useful
science newsgroups, listservs, etc. Please let me know what kinds of information
would be helpful for you!
Sources of Information
Besides this web site, there are many useful sources of information at Northwestern University
that are available on the world wide web. Try:
- NU Info
This is the official web site for Northwestern University.
- Using NUnet services
This page has information on obtaining, activating, and managing your NetID and how to
obtain your own Web account. It also has a link to information on setting a '.forward' file
for your email, and how to automatically send an "on vacation" message to people sending you
email
- Useful sites and services at NU and beyond
This page has links to some useful pages and services at NU. It has links to the new
Windows 95 support pages, modem pool numbers, NU's MEDLINE service (NUmed), as well as
links to sites outside of NU.
Organization
I have tried to lay out the Basic Science pages with the most frequently
used resources at the beginning of each page, and more specific information
coming later. As with any publication (and particularly web sites!) the
organization will evolve based on your comments and usage patterns. Please
let me know I can make this resource more valuable to you!
Layout and Navigating
At the top of each page, there should be a descriptive title that lets you
know (hopefully!) what is on the page. On some pages, there is an additional
table of contents for that page.
At the bottom of the page, there is a "table of contents"
for the entire site. This 'Navigation Banner' lets you know that you are still turned to a Basic
Science page. There is also a standard disclaimer or a disclaimer link on each page.
