What is StrainFinder(TM)?

StrainFinder(TM) is a stand-alone Macintosh application that incorporates a very versatile and powerful searching engine with a flexible and intuitive interface. StrainFinder(TM) has two different search criteria entry modes that support nested Boolean combinations of search words, wild card searches, and recursive searching (easily searching the results of a previous search to narrow in on the strain of choice). StrainFinder(TM) can save searches to disk, edit text files, search results, and print. The search target can be a single text file, a directory containing multiple text files, an open window (including the results of a previous search), or a directory containing other directories, all of which will be searched. Finally, the program is AppleEvents aware and supports a number of System 7 features, such as alias resolution.

StrainFinder(TM) Brief Overview

StrainFinder(TM) will search your genetic strain list based on an extremely flexible wild card search algorithm. It has the following features:
  1. StrainFinder(TM) can search any TEXT file stored on the Apple Macintosh, whether on a diskette or hard drive (the SOURCE).
  2. StrainFinder(TM) assumes that each strain to be searched is entered on a separate line (each line ends with a hard return, or ASCII 13).
  3. StrainFinder(TM) can perform Boolean searches on the SOURCE. Complex Boolean 'AND', 'OR', and 'NOT' expressions nested up to 5 levels deep are possible.
  4. After searching the SOURCE, StrainFinder(TM) can: (1). Display the results to an open interactive window that will support copy, paste, delete and print commands. (2). Save a list of found sequences to the Macintosh as a text file that can be opened and edited in StrainFinder(TM) or in any other Macintosh word processor.
  5. Recursive searches are possible - each search can be "researched" using new criteria (the previous search becomes the SOURCE).
  6. StrainFinder(TM) is not limited to searching strain lists: it can search any text file for any set of words defined as search criteria.

"The reason I haven't written to you sooner is that it's taken that long to get over the shock. When you said this thing was fast, you meant FAST. Unbelievable. No, UNBELIEVABLE! You might want to write a time delay into the next version, or you're going to be responsible for some cardiac arrests. Great job!"
